Crackdown in Trans-Nzoia: Alleged Goon Kingpin Arrested as Police Net Widens on Criminal Networks

A sweeping, intelligence-led security operation has dealt a significant blow to organised criminal networks in Trans-Nzoia County, following the arrest of an alleged mastermind accused of mobilising and financing gangs responsible for a surge in lawlessness across the region.

The suspect, Andrew Kimungui Wamalwa, was apprehended during a coordinated dawn raid conducted by a multi-agency team comprising officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the Administration Police Service, and the General Service Unit, alongside local security personnel.

Authorities say the operation was informed by credible intelligence pointing to Wamalwa as a central figure in orchestrating gang activities, particularly in the Kipsongo area. His alleged role includes recruiting, coordinating, and equipping groups of youths—commonly referred to as “goons”—to carry out acts of intimidation, looting, and violence.

During the meticulously planned raid at his residence, officers uncovered what investigators describe as a cache of incriminating materials. Among the items seized were reflector jackets believed to be used for identifying and coordinating gang members during operations, stickers suspected to serve as markers or signals, and three swords. Additional materials recovered at the scene are currently undergoing forensic analysis to establish their link to reported criminal incidents.

Security officials believe the arrest could mark a turning point in dismantling a broader network that has been destabilising communities and undermining public safety in parts of the county.

“This was not an isolated actor. Preliminary investigations suggest a structured network with clear roles, financing channels, and coordination mechanisms,” a senior officer involved in the operation said, indicating that more arrests are likely.

In a parallel operation carried out in the Mitume and Miti Moja neighbourhoods of Kitale, law enforcement officers arrested eleven additional suspects linked to gang-related activities. The individuals—Ken Onyango, Felix Odhiambo, Simon Wafula, Maxwell Ochieng, Ian Fwamba, Nesta Otieno, Reagan Odhiambo, Stanley Yasiro, James Odipo, Duncan Elisha, and Hilary Wafula—were reportedly found in possession of items suspected to have been looted from residents.

Recovered property included laptops and gas cylinders, which authorities say are part of a growing list of stolen goods tied to recent incidents of burglary and mob attacks in the area. Efforts are underway to identify and return the items to their rightful owners.

Residents in affected areas have in recent weeks raised alarm over increasing cases of organised looting, harassment, and night-time attacks, often blamed on coordinated groups operating with apparent impunity. The latest arrests have therefore been welcomed as a sign of renewed resolve by security agencies.

All suspects are currently in custody as they undergo processing ahead of their arraignment in court. Meanwhile, investigators are pursuing additional leads to track down other members of the network, including financiers and coordinators believed to still be at large.

The operation underscores the commitment of Kenya’s security apparatus to confront organised crime and restore order. Authorities have also called on members of the public to continue sharing information that could aid in ongoing investigations, assuring them of confidentiality and protection.

As the crackdown intensifies, law enforcement agencies say they remain vigilant and determined to dismantle criminal syndicates that threaten the peace and stability of communities in Trans-Nzoia and beyond.
