Bungoma County Launches New Revenue Recovery Unit to Curb Leakages and Boost Collections

Bungoma County has intensified efforts to increase its own-source revenue with the launch of a new Revenue Recovery Initiative (RRI) team aimed at plugging revenue leakages and enhancing compliance across the board.

The county government has set an ambitious target to raise revenue collections to KSh 600 million, a significant increase from current levels, through tighter enforcement measures and strengthened accountability frameworks.

At the official flag-off event, Chief Officer for Finance, Robert Juma, alongside Chief Officer for Public Service, Evelyn Wekesa, called on the new team to execute their mandate with a balance of firmness and fairness. They underscored the importance of professionalism and ethical conduct when engaging with the public to maintain trust and transparency.

Both officers issued a clear directive against selective enforcement, warning that no individual or business—including those connected to elected leaders or county officials—will be granted exemptions. This stance comes amid rising public concern over allegations of preferential treatment in revenue collection processes.

The establishment of the Revenue Recovery Unit marks a strategic pivot in Bungoma’s revenue management approach, reflecting the county’s zero-tolerance policy towards revenue leakages. It also signals a renewed commitment to equitable tax enforcement aimed at maximizing county resources to improve service delivery.

County officials expressed confidence that the initiative will not only improve financial performance but also restore public confidence in the revenue collection system by promoting fairness and accountability.

The RRI team is now tasked with identifying and sealing loopholes, ensuring compliance, and recovering outstanding debts to help Bungoma achieve its financial goals and enhance development projects for its residents.
