Sifuna Reconnects With Longtime Odinga Ally During Visit to Meru
Edwin Sifuna, Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), on Sunday paid a heartfelt visit to the home of veteran Meru leader Zablon Mathenge, describing the occasion as a continuation of a long-standing friendship between Mathenge and ODM leader Raila Odinga.
Speaking during the visit in Meru, Sifuna recalled a previous trip in February 2024 when Mathenge hosted him and Odinga, fondly referred to as “Baba” by supporters.
“Mzee Zablon Mathenge was one of Baba’s true friends,” Sifuna said. “He hosted us in this very home in Meru in February of 2024. I am honored beyond measure that Mzee Mathenge has chosen to continue this friendship by inviting me back.”
Sifuna said the visit symbolized the enduring personal and political ties that ODM has built across the Mt. Kenya region over the years, crediting Mathenge for playing a key role in fostering dialogue and unity among leaders from different parts of the country.
The ODM Secretary General emphasized that such relationships reflect the party’s commitment to national cohesion and cross-regional cooperation. He noted that friendships like the one between Odinga and Mathenge help bridge political and cultural divides.
Local leaders who attended the meeting described Mathenge as a respected elder whose home has often served as a place for candid conversations about the country’s political future.
Sifuna said he was grateful for the warm reception in Meru and reiterated ODM’s commitment to strengthening engagement with communities across Kenya.
“Asante sana to Mzee Mathenge and the people of Meru for the hospitality,” Sifuna said, adding that the visit reaffirmed the importance of long-standing friendships in shaping Kenya’s political journey.
