Ruto Set to Launch Construction of Naivasha–Kisumu–Malaba SGR Extension
Preparations are underway for the launch of the next phase of Kenya’s Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) following a high-level planning meeting chaired by Philip Mainga, Managing Director of Kenya Railways Corporation, in Kisumu on Tuesday.
The meeting brought together officials from the Presidential Protocol team, representatives from the National Land Commission, security heads from Kenya Railways and Kisumu County Government, as well as the project contractor. Discussions focused on coordinating logistics and operational arrangements ahead of the official launch of the Naivasha–Kisumu–Malaba Standard Gauge Railway Phases 2B and 2C.
Following the meeting, Mainga conducted an on-site inspection of the project area in Kibos, where preliminary activities are already underway. He emphasized the importance of collaboration among all teams involved to ensure a smooth and successful groundbreaking ceremony.
“The success of this launch depends on seamless coordination among all stakeholders,” Mainga said during the inspection, noting that the contractor has already mobilized equipment and personnel on the ground to begin early preparatory works ahead of the laying of the standard gauge railway tracks.
William Ruto, President of Kenya, is expected to preside over the official launch of the construction project, which is considered a key milestone in expanding the country’s modern railway network.
The Naivasha–Kisumu–Malaba SGR extension will form part of the broader corridor linking the Port of Mombasa to the inland regions and neighboring countries. Once completed, the line will extend the railway from Naivasha through Kisumu to Malaba at the Kenya–Uganda border.
The project will also create a direct connection between the Port of Mombasa and Kisumu Port on Lake Victoria, enabling smoother cargo movement and strengthening cross-border trade across the East African region.
Kenya Railways Corporation said it remains committed to delivering the infrastructure within the stipulated timelines, noting that the project is expected to significantly ease cargo transportation, stimulate economic growth, and enhance regional connectivity across East Africa.
