Nyanza Set for Tourism Boost After Presidential Development Tour
Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano has hailed the conclusion of President William Ruto’s four-day development tour of the Nyanza region as a transformative moment for Kenya’s tourism and wildlife sectors.
In a statement following the visit, Miano emphasized that the government’s renewed focus on infrastructure development is set to unlock the region’s vast but underutilized tourism potential. Central to this vision is the planned expansion of Lichota Airstrip in Migori County, which is expected to significantly improve connectivity between the Lake Victoria basin, the Maasai Mara, and northern Tanzania. The project is poised to create a seamless “Lake-to-Savannah” tourism circuit, appealing to both international and domestic travelers.
The tour also marked the groundbreaking of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) Phase 2C line, which will link Kisumu to Malaba. The railway extension is expected to enhance regional trade and tourism by improving access to western Kenya and neighboring countries. Additionally, the completion of the Rusinga Island Ring Road is anticipated to open up scenic and cultural attractions around Lake Victoria, making them more accessible to visitors.
Miano highlighted the government’s commitment to developing the Blue Economy as a key pillar of growth in the region. With new piers planned for Usenge and Homa Bay, authorities aim to position Lake Victoria as a premier destination for water sports, luxury cruises, and eco-tourism ventures.
Experts say improved infrastructure, particularly roads and transport networks, will not only boost tourist arrivals but also create employment opportunities for local communities, especially the youth.
“The future of Nyanza tourism is bright,” Miano said, noting that inclusive development remains central to the government’s agenda of ensuring no region is left behind in positioning Kenya as a top-tier global tourism destination.
The developments align with the country’s broader tourism branding campaign, “Magical Kenya: The Origin of Wonder,” which seeks to showcase diverse attractions across the country while promoting sustainable and inclusive growth.
