Man Arrested Over Alleged Mutilation of Kenyan Currency Shared on TikTok

Detectives from the Banking Fraud Investigations Unit (BFIU) have arrested a man accused of mutilating Kenyan currency notes and sharing videos of the acts on social media.

The suspect, identified as Maximilian Motara, was apprehended following investigations into clips that allegedly showed him damaging Kenyan banknotes and posting the content on the popular platform TikTok.

According to investigators, the videos circulated online sparked concern and prompted authorities to launch a probe, leading to Motara’s arrest.

BFIU detectives confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody as officers finalize investigations ahead of his planned arraignment in court.

Mutilating or defacing currency is an offence under Kenyan law, with authorities warning that such actions undermine the integrity of the country’s monetary system.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations urged members of the public to respect national currency and avoid engaging in activities that could lead to legal consequences.

Motara is expected to be presented before court once the processing procedures are completed.
