Hundreds of Families Receive New Homes in Kakamega as Boma Yangu Project Expands
A major milestone in Kenya’s affordable housing agenda was achieved today as over 180 families received keys to their new homes at Milimani Estate Phase I in Kakamega County.
The houses were officially handed over by William Ruto, marking a significant step in the government’s efforts to make homeownership accessible to more Kenyans under the Boma Yangu initiative.
The Milimani Estate Phase I development consists of 220 units designed to cater to a wide range of residents. The units include 60 studio apartments, 20 one-bedroom units, 100 two-bedroom homes, and 40 three-bedroom houses—offering flexible housing options for individuals, couples, and larger families.
Residents moving into the estate will benefit from a modern, well-planned environment featuring landscaped green spaces, well-lit internal roads, pedestrian walkways, and ample parking. The development also includes essential social amenities aimed at fostering safe and vibrant community living.
Speaking during the event, President Ruto reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing the country’s housing deficit while improving livelihoods and creating jobs through large-scale infrastructure projects.
In a further boost to the program, the President also laid the foundation stone for Milimani Estate Phase II, a significantly larger expansion set to deliver 1,891 additional housing units across 13 residential blocks. The second phase will feature a mix of 947 affordable units, 392 social housing units, and 552 market-rate homes.
Phase II will also incorporate key infrastructure and community facilities, including a community centre, kindergarten, primary school, commercial stalls, and essential utilities such as road networks, sewer systems, a borehole, and power infrastructure. Additional features like cabro-paved driveways, parking areas, and a secure boundary wall are expected to support the development of a self-sustaining neighborhood.
The milestone underscores Kenya’s ongoing push to expand access to decent and affordable housing, a key pillar of the government’s development agenda.
Prospective homeowners are encouraged to register for the program via the Boma Yangu platform by dialing *832# or visiting the official website.
The Kakamega project reflects a broader national effort to transform urban living and bring the dream of homeownership within reach for thousands of Kenyans.
