Nationwide Matatu Strike Set for Monday, February 2, 2026 – Matatu Owners Association Confirms

The President of the Matatu Owners Association (MOA), Mr. Albert Karakacha, has confirmed that a nationwide matatu strike will proceed on Monday, February 2, 2026, following growing concerns over violent attacks on vehicles and the safety of road users across the country.

The strike, which is supported by motorists, truck drivers, private vehicle owners, and public transport operators, has been called in protest against what transport stakeholders describe as a sharp increase in vehicle torchings, mob justice incidents, and violent attacks following road accidents, coupled with an inadequate response from authorities.

Speaking on behalf of the transport sector, leaders from the Motorists Association of Kenya and allied groups said operators have suffered losses running into millions of shillings, eroding confidence in law enforcement’s ability to protect motorists, passengers, and transport assets.

The associations warned that unless decisive action is taken to arrest and prosecute perpetrators, curb mob justice, and enhance roadside security, the transport sector will down tools nationwide starting Monday.

While meetings between law enforcement agencies and transport sector representatives have taken place in recent days, there has been no official communication confirming the suspension or cancellation of the strike as of Sunday evening.

Public Advisory

Members of the public are advised to prepare for significant transport disruptions on Monday, February 2, including reduced availability of matatu and other public transport services.

Plan essential travel in advance and consider alternatives such as remote work, carpooling, or rescheduling non-urgent trips.

Monitor official traffic and transport updates from verified government and security channels.

Expect possible congestion and crowding at major stages, terminals, and transport hubs.

Avoid confrontations with protesters or frustrated commuters and report security concerns to authorities.

The planned strike highlights deep-seated frustrations within Kenya’s transport sector over road safety, property destruction, and the protection of motorists and passengers. Pressure continues to mount on authorities to provide concrete solutions that restore confidence and safety on Kenyan roads.
