Nairobi South B MCA Hon. Waithera Chege Calls for Accountability Over Sh151 Million Secret City Hall Account
The Member of County Assembly for Nairobi South B Ward, Hon. Waithera Chege, has raised the alarm and demanded decisive action following revelations of a Sh151 million secret bank account allegedly operated at City Hall.
Hon. Chege’s concerns follow findings from a forensic audit that uncovered an unauthorized bank account opened in November 2024, reportedly operating outside the Integrated Financial Management Information System (IFMIS). The account is said to have received large and suspicious overnight deposits, raising serious concerns over potential fraud and violation of public finance management laws.
Describing the revelations as deeply disturbing, Hon. Chege stated that the existence of such an account undermines transparency, accountability, and public trust in county governance.
“This is a serious breach of public finance regulations. Heads must roll,” said Hon. Chege, calling for swift and thorough investigations into all individuals involved in the opening, authorization, and operation of the account.
The MCA urged investigative agencies, including the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), to fast-track inquiries into the identities of the alleged “silent signatories” and to establish whether public revenues were unlawfully diverted from legitimate county collection streams.
Hon. Chege emphasized that Nairobi residents deserve full disclosure and accountability, noting that no individual should be shielded from scrutiny regardless of their position in government.
The revelations have heightened public concern over financial governance at City Hall and renewed calls for stronger oversight mechanisms to safeguard public resources.
