MTRH, Uasin Gishu County Mark World Cancer Day with Awareness Drive
Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), in partnership with the Uasin Gishu County Government, marked World Cancer Day during a colourful public awareness event held at the Uasin Gishu County Headquarters grounds.
The event brought together health professionals, county officials, development partners, cancer survivors, and members of the public to highlight the importance of cancer prevention, early detection, and access to quality cancer care services.
Representing the County Government of Uasin Gishu, Chief Officer for Health Dr. Wangwe Ongeti emphasized the county’s commitment to strengthening cancer care through expanded screening programmes, improved referral systems, and public sensitization. He urged residents to take advantage of available health services and prioritize regular medical check-ups, noting that Pioneer Health Centre has been designated as the county’s primary facility for cancer screening.
Speaking at the event, MTRH Acting Chief Executive Officer Dr. Andrew Wandera reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to enhancing cancer services through early diagnosis, treatment, and community education. He underscored the importance of strong partnerships between national referral hospitals and county governments in the fight against cancer.
The Chief Guest, Uasin Gishu County First Lady Mama Salina Bii, called for greater emphasis on preventive healthcare and pledged continued support for cancer awareness initiatives targeting women, youth, and vulnerable populations.
The event was also attended by the First Lady of Turkana County, Lilian Ekamais, alongside senior health officials including Christine Tonui, Director of Health Administration at MTRH, Dr. Jesse Opakas, Director of Hemato-Oncology at MTRH, and consultants from MTRH, Moi University, and the Uasin Gishu County Government.
Key partners who supported the event included Lodwar County Referral Hospital, Eldoret Oncology Associates, Eldoret Hospice, Eldoret Hospital, Eldobase Limited, Living Room International, among others.
World Cancer Day is observed globally to unite communities, organizations, and governments in the fight against cancer, while inspiring collective action to reduce the cancer burden and save lives.
