Interior CS Murkomen Pledges Crackdown After Banditry Attack in Kainuk
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced a comprehensive security operation in Kainuk following recent banditry attacks along the border of Turkana and West Pokot counties.
Speaking during a tour of the area on Tuesday, Murkomen said the government had made notable gains in restoring peace across much of the Kerio Valley region but acknowledged that persistent insecurity in some pockets continued to threaten stability.
“We have made significant progress in restoring peace and normal life in many parts of the Kerio Valley region,” Murkomen said. “There are, however, areas where we need to do more to eradicate acts of banditry and weed out criminal elements trying to take us back.”
The Interior CS said Kainuk had experienced repeated incidents of banditry in recent months, prompting the government to intensify security measures. He revealed that the planned operation would include the disarmament of illegal firearms and the arrest of those responsible for the attacks, as well as individuals believed to be sponsoring criminal activities.
“We are rolling out a comprehensive operation in the area, which will include disarmament and apprehension of perpetrators and their sponsors,” he said.
Murkomen also urged political leaders from Turkana and West Pokot counties to exercise restraint, warning that inflammatory statements could worsen tensions in the already volatile region. He called on local residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as the operation gets underway.
The Kerio Valley has for years been plagued by banditry and inter-communal violence, often fueled by competition over pasture, livestock theft, and the proliferation of illegal weapons. The government has previously launched several security operations aimed at restoring lasting peace in the region.
