Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba Urges Residents to Register for SHA, Blasts “Politics of Delay”

Githunguri, Kiambu County – Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has called on residents of the Mt. Kenya region to register for the Social Health Authority (SHA), warning that political campaigns by some leaders are misleading Kenyans about the program.

Speaking in Githunguri on Thursday, Wamuchomba said some politicians have discouraged residents from joining SHA, claiming it does not work, and have promised benefits only after the 2027 general elections.

“These lies have cost families their savings and, in some cases, their lives. Primary healthcare is a constitutional right, whether you like the government or not,” she said.

Wamuchomba, who described herself as a former supporter of the anti-SHA narrative, said that many leaders opposing SHA already have active accounts, allowing them and their families to access services such as diabetes and hypertension screenings.

She criticized what she called the “politics of delay,” saying it has left residents dependent on fundraisers to cover medical expenses. “Under this thinking, farmers should stop farming, students should stop studying, and roads should stop being built until 2027. That is not leadership; that is self-sabotage,” she said.

The MP urged residents to reject political propaganda that discourages access to healthcare and other essential services. “Better to deal with reality today than die waiting for an angel that may never come,” she added.

SHA, launched by the government, offers citizens access to screening and treatment for common illnesses, including hypertension, diabetes, and other primary health services. Wamuchomba said it is working in many parts of the country and urged Mt. Kenya residents not to miss out.
