Diani Modern Market Completed Under Affordable Housing Programme in Kwale County
The Diani Modern Market, developed under the Government’s Affordable Housing Programme in Kwale County, has been completed and is set to be handed over to traders, reaffirming the Government’s commitment to improving livelihoods through the provision of modern, well-planned, and inclusive trading infrastructure.
Speaking on the project, Hon. Charles Hinga, Principal Secretary, State Department for Housing and Urban Development, underscored the Government’s focus on creating dignified and enabling workspaces for traders as part of its broader socio-economic transformation agenda.
The state-of-the-art market features 219 modern stalls alongside expanded spaces dedicated to fresh produce and is expected to serve up to 500 local traders. The facility offers an all-weather, secure, and organized trading environment designed to enhance productivity, safety, and business growth.
Beyond trading spaces, the market integrates key amenities aimed at improving convenience and supporting enterprise development. These include an ICT hub, crèche, ablution blocks, a food court, and a social hall, among other facilities that respond to the diverse needs of traders and customers.
The project has also played a significant role in local economic empowerment, having generated employment opportunities for youth and women during the construction phase, thereby contributing to community livelihoods and skills development.
The Diani Modern Market stands as a key milestone in the Government’s efforts to modernize market infrastructure, promote inclusive urban development, and strengthen grassroots economic growth under the Affordable Housing Programme.
