Belgut MP Nelson Koech Dares Sifuna to Quit ODM and Form Own Party

Belgut Member of Parliament Nelson Koech has challenged Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna to resign from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and form his own political party if he believes he truly represents the ideals of ODM leader Raila Odinga.

Speaking during a public address, Koech criticized Sifuna over his recent political pronouncements, accusing him of invoking Raila’s name while remaining within the ODM party structure.

“If Sifuna truly believes in the spirit of Raila, I dare him to resign from ODM today and form his own party,” Koech said.

The Belgut lawmaker argued that leaders who claim to champion certain political ideals should demonstrate their conviction through decisive action rather than statements. He maintained that party loyalty and ideological consistency must go hand in hand.

Sifuna, who serves as ODM Secretary-General in addition to being Nairobi Senator, has recently been vocal on national governance issues, often defending the party’s stance and positioning himself as a key figure within the opposition.

Koech’s remarks are the latest in a series of exchanges between leaders affiliated with the ruling coalition and those in the opposition. Political observers say the challenge reflects heightened tensions as leaders recalibrate their strategies amid shifting political dynamics.

Attempts to get an immediate response from Sifuna were unsuccessful. However, ODM insiders have previously dismissed similar criticism from Kenya Kwanza legislators as politically motivated.

The unfolding exchange adds to growing political rivalry as the country’s leaders continue to position themselves ahead of future political contests.
