President Ruto Reaffirms Commitment to Sports Development and Youth Empowerment

President William Ruto has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transforming sports infrastructure across the country as a key pillar for nurturing talent, empowering youth, and strengthening national unity.

The President announced that the government is constructing 21 modern stadia nationwide to provide young people with world-class facilities that can help identify, develop, and showcase their sporting talents. Among these flagship projects is the Talanta Sports City Stadium, which is on course for completion later this year and will stand as a landmark facility meeting international standards.

“This investment is about giving our young people the opportunity to dream, compete, and succeed on the global stage,” President Ruto said, noting that sports play a critical role in job creation, social cohesion, and national pride.

As part of this broader agenda, the President attended the FCPA Barasa Governor’s Cup at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega County, where he announced a KSh1.4 billion government commitment to complete the stadium. Once finished, Bukhungu Stadium will have a 25,000-seat capacity, making it the largest sports facility in Western Kenya and a major hub for sporting excellence in the region.

The President emphasized that the upgraded stadium will not only host major sporting events but also support youth development programs and stimulate local economic growth.

The investment in sports infrastructure forms part of a wider development plan for Kakamega County, where the national government has already committed KSh35 billion toward projects aimed at accelerating development and improving livelihoods. These investments span infrastructure, social services, and economic empowerment initiatives designed to raise the quality of life for residents.

“Our vision is clear,” President Ruto said. “We are building modern infrastructure, investing in our people, and laying a strong foundation for inclusive growth—so that every region, including Kakamega County, can thrive.”

The President reiterated that sports will remain a central component of the government’s development strategy, positioning Kenya as a regional and global force in athletics and competitive sports.
