Kilifi Explores Swiss Partnership to Boost Hospitality Skills Training

The Kilifi County Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a key driver of youth employment, workforce development and private-sector competitiveness, particularly within the county’s fast-growing hospitality and tourism sector.

Speaking after receiving a courtesy call from a Swisscontact delegation led by Country Director Ms. Sharon Mosin Urner, Kilifi Deputy Governor Ms. Flora Mbetsa Chibule said the county is exploring a potential partnership to roll out an employer-led dual apprenticeship programme under the TVET framework for the hospitality industry.

The proposed programme, dubbed PropelA, places employers at the centre of skills development, ensuring trainees acquire market-relevant, demand-driven skills that align with industry needs.

Ms. Chibule noted that Swisscontact, which has over 27 years of experience in Kenya, has successfully implemented similar models that bridge the gap between training institutions and the labour market, translating skills acquisition into meaningful employment and improved sector productivity.

“TVET remains a critical pillar in our development agenda, especially as we seek to equip young people with practical skills that respond to the realities of the job market,” said the Deputy Governor.

She added that under the leadership of Governor Gideon Maitha Mung’aro, the county is committed to strengthening TVET institutions as engines of inclusive growth, while positioning Kilifi as a competitive destination for hospitality and tourism investment.

The engagement brought together the Kilifi Department of Education and ICT and the Department of Trade, Tourism and Co-operative Development, reflecting a coordinated approach to skills development and economic transformation.
