Government Hands Over Phase II of Boma Yangu Mukuru Estate, Advancing Integrated Urban Renewal
The Government has marked another significant milestone in its slum eradication and urban renewal agenda with the official handover of Phase II of the Boma Yangu Mukuru Estate by H.E. President William Samoei Ruto.
The newly completed phase has provided nearly 4,500 families with keys to decent and affordable homes, reinforcing the Government’s commitment to restoring dignity and improving living conditions for residents of informal settlements.
Speaking during the handover, the project was highlighted as a model of integrated urban renewal, founded on the understanding that housing alone is not sufficient to transform communities. The development deliberately incorporates essential social infrastructure to ensure families are not only housed, but also supported to live, learn and thrive.
Central to this approach is the fully completed New Mukuru Primary School and Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre, constructed within the estate to serve the growing population. The primary school has already been handed over to the Ministry of Education, while the ECD Centre is under the management of the County Government of Nairobi.
A headteacher has been appointed, teachers deployed and the school is now ready to admit its first cohort of learners. This ensures that families relocating to the estate have immediate access to quality education within a safe and nurturing environment.
Beyond education, the estate integrates other critical public amenities aimed at enhancing safety, security and wellbeing. These include a Fire Station to improve emergency response and protect lives and property, a Police Station to strengthen security and community policing, and a Level IV Hospital to provide accessible and comprehensive healthcare services to residents.
The State Department for Interior and National Administration will play a central role in operationalising key security and safety components of the estate. In line with its mandate, the Department will coordinate the activation of the Police Station, support disaster and emergency preparedness through the Fire Station and work with other agencies to ensure effective administration and internal security within the Mukuru community.
The completion of Phase II of the Boma Yangu Mukuru Estate underscores the Government’s broader vision of sustainable urban development—one that combines decent housing with essential services to foster safe, resilient and inclusive communities.
