The KBA school Director, Dr. Moses Mwangi, has raised serious concerns over the continued shortage of Grade 10 textbooks, warning that the situation poses a major threat to the smooth implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) at the senior school level.
Speaking while addressing the Media, Dr. Mwangi noted that many schools across the country have already admitted Grade 10 learners, yet the required learning materials are either unavailable or insufficient.
He emphasized that the lack of textbooks has placed both teachers and learners in a difficult position, undermining effective teaching and learning.
“It is worrying that learners have transitioned to Grade 10 without adequate textbooks. Quality education cannot be achieved without timely provision of learning materials,” said Dr. Mwangi.
Dr. Mwangi urged the Ministry of Education, the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), and other relevant government agencies to urgently fast-track the approval, procurement, and distribution of Grade 10 textbooks to all schools. He stressed that delays could widen learning gaps and compromise the objectives of the CBC.
The KBA Director reaffirmed the association’s readiness to work closely with the government, publishers, and schools to ensure that approved textbooks are made available in good time. He also called for better planning and coordination to avoid similar challenges in future curriculum transitions.
Dr. Mwangi concluded by appealing to all stakeholders to prioritize the interests of learners, noting that access to textbooks is a fundamental pillar of equity, quality, and success in education.
