County Partners with Moi University, Sweden to Roll Out Groundbreaking Genetic Counselling Program

The County Government of Uasin Gishu has partnered with Moi University and the Swedish Government to roll out a pioneering Genetic Counselling Program aimed at strengthening cancer prevention, early detection, and research.

The initiative was discussed during a high-level meeting hosted on Tuesday by the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health Services, Janet Kurgat, who described cancer as a growing public health challenge that continues to place immense strain on families and the healthcare system.

Speaking during the engagement, Kurgat said the program will play a critical role in transforming cancer care within the county by integrating genetics into routine health planning and service delivery.

“This partnership positions Uasin Gishu at the forefront of evidence-based healthcare. By incorporating genetic counselling into our health systems, we are strengthening our capacity for early detection, prevention, and targeted intervention,” she noted.

The Genetic Counselling Program seeks to co-develop a multi-institutional education framework that will improve the quality of care for patients with cancer and other genetically linked conditions. The initiative will also establish clear referral pathways, reducing unnecessary referrals and easing congestion in high-volume health facilities.

Chief Officer for Promotive and Preventive Health Services, Dr. Paul Wangwe, and Chief Officer for Clinical Services, Ambrose Tarus, emphasized the urgency of identifying the root causes of cancer and intervening early.

They observed that the project comes at a critical time as the county intensifies efforts to address cancer from the community level upwards, with a strong focus on prevention, early diagnosis, and timely treatment.

“This program aligns with our broader strategy of tackling cancer through preventive and promotive approaches while strengthening clinical services,” said Dr. Wangwe.

Also present at the meeting was the Director of Medical Services, Dr. Evans Kiprotich, alongside officials from Moi University, who reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the initiative through research, training, and technical expertise.

Once implemented, the program is expected to enhance local capacity in genetic counselling, improve patient outcomes, and position Uasin Gishu County as a regional leader in innovative and research-driven healthcare solutions.
