Suspect Charged With Publishing False Information

A man has been charged at the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi for allegedly publishing false information online with intent to incite violence.

Detectives from the Special Crime Unit (SCU) on Monday arraigned Boniface Mulinge Muteti over claims that he disseminated inflammatory and misleading content through his X (formerly Twitter) account.

According to the prosecution, Muteti, using the username Mulinge Muteti, published a post on December 6, 2025, calling on members of the public to seize property allegedly owned by politicians and to “arm themselves” in preparation for an uprising. Authorities allege that the message was knowingly false and intended to incite violence among the public.

The State says the post violated Section 23 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Act No. 5 of 2018, which criminalises the publication of false information likely to cause panic, chaos, or violence.

Muteti pleaded not guilty to the charge when he appeared before the court. The magistrate granted him bail of Sh15,000 pending trial.

The case is scheduled for a pretrial hearing on December 30, 2025.

In a statement following the arraignment, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) reiterated that spreading false or inflammatory information online is a criminal offence and urged Kenyans to exercise responsibility and restraint in their use of social media platforms.
