Security Teams on High Alert as Festive Season Begins in Busia
Security agencies in Busia County have been placed on high alert ahead of the festive season following reports of youth forming criminal gangs to disrupt peace.
Busia County Commissioner Stephen Orinde warned that law enforcement officers will take firm action against individuals or groups engaging in illegal activities.
“We are in the festive season and have information about young people forming groups to disrupt peace in our county. Our security team is on alert to protect the public. Any unregistered groups with unknown activities will not be tolerated,” Orinde said.
The county commissioner also raised concerns over safety in the mining sector, particularly gold mining, urging miners to adhere to established safety standards.
“We are lucky to have gold in our county, but mining must follow proper procedures. Miners need the right protective gear, and we will work with stakeholders to ensure safe operations,” he added.
Orinde further expressed concern over declining academic performance in schools across the county, linking the trend to the prevalence of night parties commonly referred to as disco matanga.
“School performance is going down, partly due to rampant night parties. To secure our children’s future, we will tackle disco matanga to reduce early pregnancies and school dropouts,” he said.
He called on parents, community leaders, and other stakeholders to work closely with security agencies to maintain law and order during the festive season and to safeguard the wellbeing of children and youth.
Security teams have intensified patrols and surveillance across the county as authorities seek to ensure a peaceful and safe festive period for residents.
