President Ruto Launches Mukuru Housing Estate Phase II, Hands Over 4,536 Homes
President William Ruto on Thursday officially unveiled Mukuru Housing Estate Phase II, marking a major milestone in the Government’s Affordable Housing Programme with the completion of 4,536 modern studio apartments.
During the ceremony, the President handed over keys to new homeowners, many of whom previously lived in informal settlements without access to basic services such as clean water, sanitation, electricity and proper road infrastructure. The development, he said, represents a significant step toward restoring dignity and improving the quality of life for thousands of Kenyan families.
“These homes are more than shelter; they represent dignity, opportunity and hope,” President Ruto said. “What has been a dream for decades is now a lived reality for thousands of Kenyans.”
The Mukuru Housing Estate Phase II features essential amenities designed to support sustainable urban living, including a reticulated clean gas system, schools, a police station and a fire station—services that were largely absent in the former settlements.
President Ruto noted that the project aligns with the Government’s broader commitment to inclusive growth and sustainable development through the Affordable Housing Programme. He said housing projects are currently ongoing in all 47 counties, with about 240,000 housing units at various stages of completion.
According to the President, the programme has so far created approximately 480,000 jobs, mainly benefiting skilled youth, while delivering safe, decent and affordable homes across the country.
At Mukuru Estate Phase II, the President also handed over keys to homeowners in developments comprising about 5,000 units at Riara and 2,920 units at Muriguini.
Earlier in the day, President Ruto, accompanied by Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki and other leaders, officially opened several public facilities serving the Mukuru community. These included the New Mukuru Level IV Hospital, Mukuru Fire Station, Mukuru Mall, Mukuru Police Station, and the New Mukuru Primary and Pre-School.
The facilities are expected to enhance access to healthcare, education, security and emergency services, further transforming Mukuru into a well-planned and fully serviced urban neighbourhood.
