Mandera South MP, Government Officials Hold Crisis Meeting as Drought Worsens
Mandera South MP Abdul Haro Kore on Monday morning convened a high-level meeting with top national government officials to address the worsening drought crisis in Mandera County, which has emerged as the most affected region in the country.
The meeting brought together Principal Secretary Ismael Madey of the State Department for Special Programmes, Principal Secretary Kello Harsama of the State Department for ASALs and Regional Development, and officials from the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA), including CEO Lt. Col. (Rtd) Harreth Hassan Adan.
According to MP Haro, the discussions were constructive and focused on the urgent measures needed to save lives and protect livelihoods as drought conditions rapidly deteriorate.
During the briefing, PS Madey confirmed that the government had already dispatched five trucks of relief food to Lafey Sub-county over the weekend. He further noted that Marsabit County had also received its allocation, while additional consignments for Kotulo, Elwak, and other sub-counties within Mandera were ready for immediate deployment.
Relief distribution, he said, will be fast-tracked to ensure households and livestock receive support as quickly as possible.
MP Haro appealed to residents to remain calm and maintain peace as the government mobilizes emergency supplies. He urged communities to support one another and share the limited available resources with the most vulnerable during this difficult period.
He assured constituents that their leaders are fully engaged in managing the crisis.
“As we have done in previous drought and flood emergencies, we are on top of the situation and will handle it with the urgency and care it deserves,” he said.
Mandera County continues to face severe water and food shortages, with authorities warning that swift action is essential to avert further humanitarian distress.
