Kenyan Engineering Stakeholders Sign Joint MoU with Tongji University to Establish Tongji Kenya College of Elite Engineers

Kenyan engineering institutions have taken a significant step toward advancing engineering education and international collaboration following a joint Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) ceremony involving key national stakeholders and China’s renowned Tongji University. The event was also attended by the Registrar, who has been instrumental in steering Kenya’s engineering standards and partnerships.

Tongji University announced plans to establish the Tongji Kenya College of Elite Engineers, an initiative designed to expand opportunities for advanced engineering training and strengthen Kenya’s technical capacity. The collaboration follows a high-level visit in September 2025 by Kenyan partner agencies—including the University of Nairobi (UoN), Murang’a University of Technology (MUT), the Multimedia University of Kenya (MMU), the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK), and the National Construction Authority (NCA)—to Tongji University for detailed discussions on the MoU.

Industrial training and practical exposure for students will be supported by several major partners, including Huawei Technologies Kenya, China Road and Bridge Corporation (Kenya), China State Construction Engineering Corporation (Kenya), and ZTE Kenya Ltd.

The partnership aims to address Kenya’s strategic national development needs by deepening education reform, strengthening sustainable development in engineering education, and building localized technical talent within Chinese-funded enterprises operating in Kenya. It further seeks to enhance academic exchange, promote mutual cooperation, and support the internationalization of engineering higher education between the two countries.

As part of this cooperation, 50 engineering graduates will begin Master’s-level training at the University of Nairobi, marking the first cohort under the new collaboration.

The Registrar commended the ongoing work and leadership of Eng. Ogai, noting that his dedication has been central to driving reforms, coordinating stakeholders, and positioning Kenya as a strong partner in global engineering education. His commitment to raising professional standards and widening training opportunities continues to benefit both the engineering fraternity and the country at large.
