Kenya Reaffirms Commitment to Safe and Orderly Migration on International Migrants’ Day 2025
The Government of Kenya has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting safe, orderly, and regular migration as a key driver of development, skills transfer, and cultural exchange.
Speaking during the International Migrants’ Day 2025 celebrations held at the National Museums of Kenya in Nairobi, Ms. Irene Karari, Director of the Skills and Expertise Division, emphasized the government’s dedication to ensuring that migration delivers positive and sustainable outcomes for individuals and the nation. Ms. Karari represented the Principal Secretary, Ms. Roseline Njogu, at the event.
The celebrations, convened by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Kenya under the theme “My Great Story: Cultures and Development,” brought together stakeholders from across the Labour Mobility Cluster under the National Coordination Mechanism on Migration. The forum provided an opportunity to reflect on the contribution of migrants to national development, cultural integration, and global cooperation.
In her remarks, Ms. Karari noted that the government is prioritizing a comprehensive approach to migration management that spans the entire migration cycle — from departure and skills development to employment, return, and reintegration.
“The Government of Kenya is committed to ensuring that migration is beneficial, safe, and sustainable by addressing every stage of the migration journey,” she said.
She further underscored the importance of protecting and empowering the Kenyan Diaspora, describing Kenyans abroad as vital partners in economic growth, innovation, and national transformation through remittances, skills transfer, and investment.
Ms. Karari also highlighted the need to strengthen Mashinani (grassroots) engagement to ensure communities have access to accurate information on safe and legal labour mobility pathways. She said such efforts are critical in curbing irregular migration and expanding inclusive access to overseas employment opportunities for all Kenyans.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to continued collaboration with development partners, the private sector, and local communities to harness migration as a powerful tool for shared prosperity and cultural enrichment.
International Migrants’ Day is marked annually to recognize the contributions of migrants worldwide and to promote policies that uphold their rights and dignity.
