Jua Kali Queens Clinch Governor’s Cup, Bag Sh1 Million Prize


Machakos Town-based side Jua Kali Queens were crowned champions of the Governor’s Cup Women’s Category after a thrilling tournament finale held at Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos.

The victorious team was awarded a Sh1 million cheque by Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti in a colourful ceremony attended by football fans, local leaders, and sports stakeholders.

Speaking during the award presentation, Governor Ndeti lauded the Jua Kali Queens for their discipline, teamwork, and determination, noting that the Governor’s Cup is part of her administration’s broader agenda to promote youth and women empowerment through sports.

“Sports provide opportunities, nurture talent, and keep our youth engaged positively. Today we celebrate our women who have shown that with support, they can excel and inspire others,” said Governor Ndeti.

Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka congratulated the team on their achievement and emphasized the importance of investing in grassroots sports to identify and develop talent at the community level.

“The success of Jua Kali Queens is a testament to what can be achieved when talent is supported. Women’s sports deserve recognition and resources,” Kalonzo said.

The Governor’s Cup tournament attracted teams from across Machakos County and has become a key platform for promoting local football talent, particularly among women and youth.

Jua Kali Queens players and officials expressed gratitude for the support, saying the prize money will go a long way in improving training, equipment, and preparations for future competitions.
