Government Assures Smooth Transition to Grade 10 in January 2026

The government has assured parents, learners, and education stakeholders of a smooth transition to Grade 10 under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) when the new phase begins in January 2026.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba said all learners will be guided into appropriate learning pathways based on their abilities, interests, and performance, in line with CBC principles.

“We expect all our children to transition smoothly. There will be challenges, but we are ready to address them through consultation with parents, teachers, and other education stakeholders,” Ogamba said.

The CS was speaking during the Nairobi End-Year O’Mogusii Thanksgiving Service held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), where he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to inclusive and learner-centred education.

Ogamba emphasized that the transition to Grade 10 marks a critical stage in CBC implementation, noting that the curriculum is designed to promote holistic development by nurturing academic excellence, talent, values, and practical skills among learners.

He also pointed to improved integrity in national assessments, revealing that the 2025 Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) recorded minimal cases of examination malpractice compared to previous years.

According to the CS, the improved credibility of national assessments reflects strengthened monitoring mechanisms and increased awareness among candidates, teachers, and school administrators.

Ogamba called on the public, parents, and education stakeholders to support and unite behind the ongoing education reforms to ensure their success.

“Education reform is a collective responsibility. With unity and support from all sectors, we can build a system that prepares our children for the future,” he said.

The transition to Grade 10 will usher learners into specialized pathways, a key component of CBC aimed at aligning education with individual strengths and national development needs.
