Former MP and Political Mobiliser Cyrus Jirongo Dies in Road Accident

Former Lugari Member of Parliament and veteran political mobiliser Cyrus Jirongo has died following a road accident on the Nairobi–Nakuru highway. The crash occurred on December 13, 2025, after a head-on collision, bringing to an end the life of one of Kenya’s most controversial and influential political figures of the multiparty era. He was 64 years old.

Born on March 21, 1961, Jirongo rose to national prominence at a remarkably young age, becoming widely known more for his political organising prowess than for a conventional professional background. He attended Mang’u High School between 1978 and 1981, where his leadership abilities began to take shape.

Jirongo burst onto the national stage in 1992 as the leader of Youth for KANU 92 (YK’92), a powerful lobby group formed to support then President Daniel arap Moi during Kenya’s first multiparty elections. The organisation played a key role in political mobilisation and fundraising, making Jirongo one of the most influential — and polarising — young political actors of the early 1990s.

Before entering elective politics, he served as chairman of AFC Leopards Football Club in 1991, a role that expanded his public profile beyond the political arena.

In the 1997 general election, Jirongo was elected Member of Parliament for Lugari Constituency. He later served as Minister for Rural Development after being appointed by President Moi in 2002, during the final KANU administration. Although he lost his parliamentary seat in the 2002 elections, he made a comeback in 2007, winning Lugari MP under his own party, the Kenya African Democratic Development Union (KADDU). Between 2008 and 2013, he was the party’s sole representative in Parliament.

Jirongo remained active in national politics, expressing presidential ambitions in 2013, though he later ran unsuccessfully for the Kakamega Senate seat while supporting Raila Odinga’s presidential bid. In 2017, he contested the presidency under the United Democratic Party, garnering a minimal share of the national vote. His party later joined the Azimio la Umoja coalition ahead of the 2022 elections, after which he publicly congratulated President William Ruto following his victory.

Alongside politics, Jirongo was associated with various business ventures in real estate and agriculture and at one point publicly claimed billionaire status. However, from the mid-2000s onward, his business empire became entangled in mounting debts and legal disputes. In 2017, the High Court declared him bankrupt after failing to repay loans amounting to hundreds of millions of shillings. Several properties linked to his companies were auctioned or placed under receivership, and courts ordered him to repay significant sums to multiple creditors, including trade unionist Francis Atwoli.

Despite his public struggles, Jirongo often spoke candidly about his personal life. He was polygamous and had a large family, with wives from different communities. In 2025, he suffered a profound personal loss following the death of one of his daughters after a short illness, a tragedy that deeply affected him.

Jirongo’s death marks the end of a complex political journey defined by rapid rise, influence, controversy, and resilience. Tributes from across the political divide have begun to pour in, remembering him as a bold mobiliser who left an indelible mark on Kenya’s political history.

May he rest in peace.
