Elgeyo Marakwet Makes Strides in Fight Against HIV

Elgeyo Marakwet County is making significant progress in the fight against HIV, with new data showing improved prevention, care, and treatment outcomes across the region. An estimated 6,335 residents are currently living with HIV in the county, which has a population of 1,326,336. The county’s HIV prevalence rate now stands at 1.9%, slightly below the national average.

Despite the gains, the county continues to face challenges. Over the past year, health authorities recorded 123 new HIV infections and 202 deaths resulting from AIDS-related illnesses. Among children aged 0 to 14, a total of 33 new infections were reported in 2024, highlighting the need for sustained efforts in preventing mother-to-child transmission.

Speaking during the World AIDS Day celebrations held in Iten, CECM for Health Services, Mrs. Monicah Rotich, reaffirmed the County Government’s commitment to expanding access to HIV prevention, treatment, and support services.

“Through continued collaboration with partners and county health workers, we will ensure life-saving medication reaches all who need it,” she said.

The county has posted notable achievements in the HIV care cascade: 95% of people living with HIV now know their status, 82% of those diagnosed are on treatment, and 97% of individuals on treatment have achieved viral suppression—an indicator of effective therapy and reduced transmission risk.

During the same event, the county also launched the 16 Days of Activism campaign, aimed at combating gender-based violence and promoting community safety. Among the attendees were Chief Officer Caroline Magut, ACC Kamariny Ward Adrian Kilot, and ICRH Medical Superintendent Dr. Lawrence Kogos.

County officials and partners expressed optimism that with continued community involvement and investment in health systems, Elgeyo Marakwet will maintain its progress and move closer to ending AIDS as a public health threat.
