DCI: CCTV Shows Jirongo’s Final Movements Seconds Before Fatal Crash
By Faith Jepleting
Nairobi New details have emerged from CCTV footage recovered by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) that tracks the final moments of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo before he died in a head-on collision with a PSV bus early this month.
According to the DCI, the video recovered from Eagol Petrol Station at Karai along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway shows that at approximately 2:18 a.m., Jirongo’s Mercedes-Benz entered the fuel station from the Nairobi direction but did not stop to refuel.
At 2:19:10 a.m., his car is seen halting briefly at the station’s exit. Less than ten seconds later, at 2:19:19 a.m., Jirongo turned his vehicle right back towards Nairobi. Just six seconds afterward, at 2:19:25 a.m., the CCTV captured a Climax Coaches PSV bus ramming into his car in a head-on collision.
In a DCI statement, investigators described the crash impact:
“The footage shows that at 02:18:40 A.M., the deceased drove into the petrol station… At 02:19:25 A.M., the CCTV captured the PSV bus ramming into the deceased’s vehicle.”
The force of the collision was severe. Police say Jirongo’s vehicle was pushed about 25 metres from the impact point, while the bus continued roughly 50 metres before stopping.
Driver’s Account
The PSV driver, Tyrus Kamau Githinji, who had recorded a statement with police at the Naivasha Traffic Base, told journalists he was faced with a split-second choice:
“The Mercedes was coming from a petrol station as I headed toward Busia from Nairobi. He didn’t give way… I tried saving him, but I felt my bus would go down. I braked, and he rammed into the bus… I’m so sorry.”
DCI confirmed the driver has been released on cash bail pending further investigations into the offence of causing death by dangerous driving and is required to report to the Naivasha Traffic Base on December 22, 2025.
Ongoing Investigation and Probe into Earlier Movements
The DCI has been interviewing witnesses present at the petrol station including the night guard and fuel attendant to corroborate the CCTV timeline.
Investigators are also tracing Jirongo’s movements prior to the crash, including statements from individuals he interacted with earlier that night, such as people present at a meeting at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi.
Detectives say additional witness statements from passengers aboard the PSV and other potential observers will be recorded as CCTV analysis continues.
