Two Killed, Three Injured in Rockfall Incident in Keiyo North
Two people have died and three others were injured following a rockfall in Kibendo area, Keiyo North, on Sunday night. The tragedy occurred amid heavy rains that continue to pound several parts of the country, heightening the risk of landslides along the Kerio Valley region.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen confirmed the incident in a statement, sending condolences to the bereaved families and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the deceased and wish a quick recovery to those who were injured,” Murkomen said.
He commended the law enforcement officers, National Government Administrative Officers (NGAOs), the County Government of Elgeyo Marakwet, and the Kenya Red Cross for their swift response and continued vigilance in handling disaster incidents in the area.
The CS cautioned residents living in landslide-prone zones to remain alert and report any signs of earth movement to local authorities.
“Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs in the region are under instruction to move people to safer grounds in areas where earth movements are detected or have been experienced in the past,” he added.
Heavy rains have triggered a series of landslide alerts across hilly parts of the country, with the Ministry of Interior urging Kenyans to prioritize safety and heed evacuation orders where necessary.
