Tension Rises in Kapsaret After Youth Allegedly Attacked Over Development Criticism

Tensions are mounting in Kapsaret after a young man, Kennedy Maswai, was allegedly attacked by a group of political goons, sparking public outrage and calls for justice.
Maswai, a vocal youth from St. George’s Village, reportedly suffered severe injuries, including head trauma and broken limbs, after questioning the slow pace of development in the area. The incident occurred barely a week after he publicly raised concerns about the lack of infrastructural projects in the constituency.
Local residents, frustrated by what they describe as a “culture of political intimidation,” organized a peaceful protest over the weekend at St. George’s. Demonstrators accused local authorities of tolerating politically motivated violence and failing to protect dissenting voices.“The community could no longer sit quietly while residents were intimidated by goons hired by politicians,” said one protester. “These people are paid to harm others and assert that they are above the law. All we want is justice for Kennedy Maswai.”
Community leaders also voiced their concern. Henry Melly, a local elder, condemned the attack, noting that Maswai was targeted simply for asking why the roads in Kapsaret remain untarmacked and why development has stalled.“Instead of getting answers, he received blows. This is unacceptable,” Melly said.
The youth also alleged that the attackers enjoy protection from the police, making accountability difficult. Edward Cheruiyot Tumu, a candidate vying for the Kapsaret MCA seat, accused the area MP, Sudi, of creating divisions in the community through offensive language during political rallies.
“For over 13 years, the people of Kapsaret have trusted him. Instead of uniting us, he is dividing us. It is time for reflection,” Tumu said.
Responding to the incident, Kapsaret Police Commander Sevania Kamerin confirmed that investigations are underway.
“We received a report early this morning about a citizen found injured last night around 7:00 p.m. The victim is receiving treatment and is in stable condition. Investigations have begun, and we will ensure that those involved are brought before court,” Commander Kamerin said, urging residents to remain patient as inquiries continue.
