Senator Jackson Mandago Mourns Lives Lost in Elgeyo-Marakwet Landslides, Urges Residents to Stay Safe

Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones in the devastating landslides that struck Elgeyo-Marakwet County following heavy rains. The tragic incident, which occurred earlier this week, has claimed dozens of lives and left many others injured, with more people feared trapped in the debris.

In a statement issued from his office in Eldoret, Mandago said that the situation in Elgeyo-Marakwet was a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers posed by seasonal rains in the region. The landslides, which swept through several villages, buried homes and left a trail of destruction in their wake. Rescue operations have been launched by the government and local authorities, with search and rescue teams working tirelessly to find survivors and recover bodies from the debris.

"We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives in Elgeyo-Marakwet County due to the recent landslides," Senator Mandago said. "On behalf of the people of Uasin Gishu, I extend my deepest condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones in this heartbreaking disaster. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time."

Mandago urged all residents of Elgeyo-Marakwet, especially those living in vulnerable areas prone to landslides and flooding, to remain alert and stay in safer areas until the situation improves. "As government rescue efforts continue, I urge all residents in the affected areas to move to safer ground and avoid any areas that may be at risk of further landslides," he said. "Your safety is of utmost importance at this time. Please cooperate with local authorities and follow all safety instructions provided by the government."

The Senator acknowledged the swift response by the government and local authorities in coordinating rescue efforts, which include the deployment of rescue teams, medical personnel, and emergency supplies. However, he also emphasized the need for long-term strategies to prevent similar disasters in the future, particularly in regions that are highly vulnerable to floods and landslides.

"The government’s immediate response is commendable, but we must also look at long-term solutions to mitigate the risks posed by heavy rains and landslides in the future," Mandago said. "There is a pressing need for better disaster preparedness and management, particularly in areas like Elgeyo-Marakwet, which are prone to such hazards. It is time to put in place measures that can prevent such tragedies from happening in the first place."

Mandago also called for increased public awareness and community engagement in disaster risk reduction programs, emphasizing the importance of early warning systems and proper infrastructure to protect vulnerable communities. "We cannot afford to be reactive when it comes to disasters. We must take proactive steps to safeguard lives, including identifying and relocating people from high-risk zones."

The Senator’s statement also highlighted the importance of national solidarity in times of crisis. "As a nation, we must come together to support the victims of this disaster," Mandago said. "I call on all Kenyans to show compassion and solidarity by contributing to relief efforts in any way possible, whether through donations, volunteering, or simply offering emotional support to those affected."

Finally, Mandago urged Parliament to fast-track discussions on disaster management policies to ensure the country is better prepared for future calamities. "It is imperative that we prioritize disaster management and invest in policies that will protect our citizens. Parliament must ensure that adequate resources are allocated to disaster relief and mitigation efforts to prevent such tragedies from reoccurring."

As the search for survivors continues in Elgeyo-Marakwet, the people of Uasin Gishu, along with the entire nation, stand united in mourning the loss of lives and extending support to the affected families during this difficult time.
