Rigathi Gachagua Makes Political Comeback, Reigniting Debate in Mt. Kenya
By Sheila Keter
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has made a notable return to the public eye, reigniting political debate across the country.
Speaking at an event in Murang’a County over the weekend, Gachagua declared that he would not stop fighting for the interests of the Mt. Kenya region.
In his speech, he accused some government leaders of abandoning the region that strongly supported President William Ruto in the last general election.
“You, Githinji, we elected you, we loved you, and voted for you. You became the president, but you betrayed us,” Gachagua said, sparking loud reactions from the crowd.
His remarks have sharply divided public opinion. While some Kenyans praised him for his courage and for “speaking the truth,” others warned that his statements could fuel fresh political tensions within the Mt. Kenya region.
Political analysts view Gachagua’s return as a calculated move ahead of the 2027 elections. They suggest he is working to rebuild his influence and re-establish himself as the dominant political voice of Mt. Kenya.
Gachagua also emphasized the need for unity and fairness, insisting that the region deserves equal development and recognition.
His comeback marks a new chapter in Kenya’s political landscape, as the country slowly begins to shift its focus toward the next election cycle.
