KNUT Leadership Pays Solemn Tribute at the resting place of the late Hon.Raila Ondinga

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), led by the National Chairman Mr. Karinga Munuhe and Secretary General Collins Oyuu conducted a solemn and reflective visit to the final resting place of the late Raila Ondinga at the Opado Farm Family Cemetery in Bondo.

The visit was a gesture of profound respect and remembrance for a figure whose life and legacy are deeply intertwined with the struggles and aspirations of the Kenyan people, and whose family continues to be a central pillar in the nation's political landscape.

Accompanied by members of the KNUT National Executive Board and Siaya County branch officials, the delegation laid a ceremonial wreath at the graveside in a moment of silent prayer and reflection. The visit underscores the union's commitment to honouring national heroes and recognizing the historical context that shapes the present.

In his address following the tribute, Nation Chairman Karinga Munuhe stated, "We are here today not merely as unionists, but as Kenyans humbled by history. We remember the late Hon Raila Ondinga  not just for the family he raised, but for the values of resilience, courage, and unwavering commitment to justice that he instilled. These are the same values that guide our union as we fight for the rights, dignity, and welfare of every teacher in Kenya."

Mr. Karinga drew parallels between the political struggles for a multi-party democracy and the trade union's fight for better working conditions. "The battles fought by the generation of the late Raila paved the way for the freedoms we enjoy today. In the same spirit, KNUT continues to engage in robust dialogue with the government and other stakeholders to ensure that the teaching profession is respected, protected, and motivated."

The KNUT chairman further used the occasion to call for unity and dialogue in the country, emphasizing that the legacy of past leaders should inspire current generations to build a more cohesive and prosperous Kenya.

"The serenity of this place is a powerful reminder that our time is limited. It challenges us to use it wisely in the service of others, to promote peace, and to work towards a lasting legacy of progress for all," he added.

The visit to the Opado Farm is part of KNUT’s broader engagement strategy during its series of meetings in the Nyanza region, focusing on member mobilization and addressing region-specific welfare issues.
