Historic Moment as KNH Performs First Cochlear Implant Surgeries in Public Healthcare

Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has marked a historic milestone with the commencement of its first-ever cochlear implant surgeries, a development set to transform the lives of children with hearing impairments in Kenya.

The week-long Cochlear Implant Surgical Project, running from 3rd to 7th November 2025, is a collaborative effort between KNH Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) surgeons and ENT specialists from the Kingdom of Morocco. The initiative aims to benefit 50 children who will undergo life-changing procedures to restore their hearing.

Already, eight children have successfully undergone surgery in KNH’s main theatres, marking the first cochlear implant procedures not only in the hospital but also within Kenya’s public healthcare sector.

“This is a major milestone for Kenya, positioning KNH as a regional Centre of Excellence in the treatment and management of hearing impairments,” said KNH officials.

The project has been made possible through the support of the First Lady of Kenya, H.E. Mama Rachel Ruto, and Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Asmaa of the Kingdom of Morocco, who generously donated cochlear implant devices valued at over Kshs. 120 million.

KNH continues to demonstrate its commitment to cutting-edge healthcare, ensuring that children with hearing challenges in Kenya have access to life-transforming medical interventions.
