Gov’t Ensures Smooth KCSE Exams in Landslide-Hit Elgeyo Marakwet — PS Bitok
Principal Secretary for Education, Prof. Julius Bitok, has assured Kenyans that the Government has implemented comprehensive measures to ensure the smooth continuation of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations in areas affected by recent landslides and heavy rains in Elgeyo Marakwet County.
Prof. Bitok made the remarks during a visit to Kapkondot Secondary School in Chesongoch, Kerio Valley—one of eight neighbouring institutions impacted by the landslides—where he oversaw the administration of the KCSE Chemistry Paper 1 examination.
“The visit underscores the Government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the welfare of all learners and ensuring that national examinations proceed seamlessly despite the challenges caused by landslides and heavy rains,” said Prof. Bitok.
He confirmed that several interventions have been put in place, including the relocation of learners from Saint Maurice Junior Secondary School to Kapkondot Secondary School and special provisions for one injured KCSE candidate currently sitting exams at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret.
“To facilitate access and safety, the Government has deployed helicopters, enhanced security, and commenced infrastructure restoration in the affected areas,” the PS added.
He further noted that psychosocial support teams have been dispatched to provide emotional and psychological counseling to affected learners, teachers, and families, ensuring their mental well-being during the examination period.
Prof. Bitok was accompanied by Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Hon. Wesley Rotich and other local leaders during the visit. He lauded the collaboration between national and county governments in responding swiftly to the disaster and ensuring continuity in learning and examinations.
“The Ministry of Education remains steadfast in its commitment to support all candidates across the country to complete their examinations without disruption,” Prof. Bitok affirmed.
