Government Agencies Honoured for Major Infrastructure Achievements at Construction Excellence Awards
Several government agencies were celebrated for their outstanding contributions to Kenya’s infrastructure development during this year’s Construction Excellence Awards, where the Special Infrastructure Impact Award recognized exemplary projects with far-reaching socio-economic impact.
The State Department for Housing and Urban Development received top honours for outstanding construction quality and design in advancing sustainable housing under the Affordable Housing Programme, a flagship initiative aimed at providing decent and affordable homes for Kenyans across the country. The award was received by Eng. Byron Buyu, Acting Secretary of the Urban and Metropolitan Department, on behalf of the Principal Secretary.
The State Department for Water and Sanitation was also feted for its innovation and contribution to sustainable water security through the Mwache Multi-Purpose Dam Project, a landmark initiative designed to enhance water supply and support irrigation and power generation in the coastal region. Eng. Hosea Wendot, Secretary, Programmes, accepted the award on behalf of the Principal Secretary.
Recognized for its adherence to high construction standards, the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) received the award for excellence in compliance with construction regulations during the implementation of the KEFRI Seed Centre Project. The accolade was accepted by the organization’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Jane Njuguna.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) was honoured for exceptional innovation and transformative impact in Kenya’s transport infrastructure through the Nairobi Expressway Project, which has significantly eased traffic congestion and improved mobility in the capital. Eng. Julia Ondeyo, Deputy Director of Public Private Partnerships, received the award on behalf of the Authority.
The Special Infrastructure Impact Award aims to recognize public sector agencies whose projects not only showcase engineering excellence but also contribute to Kenya’s broader development goals, including sustainability, inclusivity, and economic growth.
The awards ceremony underscored the government’s ongoing commitment to improving infrastructure as a key driver of national progress, with officials pledging to continue fostering innovation and quality in the construction sector.
