At least 39 people have died and 9 remain missing following a devastating landslide in Elgeyo Marakwet County, Governor Wisely Rotich has confirmed. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, led by a coordinated multi-agency effort.

Governor Rotich announced the funeral arrangements for the victims:

  • Kibendo, Keiyo North: Friday, 14th November 2025
  • Sambirir and Embobut Embolot: Monday, 17th November 2025
  • Chesongoch: Friday, 21st November 2025

He also revealed that a mega fundraiser is taking place today at Milimani AIC in Nairobi to support the funerals and resettlement of affected families.

On transport and infrastructure, the governor confirmed that lower parts of the affected roads are now accessible, while repair work continues on the Chesoi-Tirap-Moror road. Another road rehabilitation project is underway from Chepkoit to Kapchebau.

Residents of Embobut Embolot Ward can currently access the area via the Sambalat-Maron or Kapyego-Kapchoge-Chepkoit routes, while the Chesoi-Kapyego road, which sustained extensive damage, is being urgently repaired. The Cabinet Secretary for Roads has promised to expedite restoration and maintenance.

Governor Rotich thanked all those who have contributed to relief efforts and called for continued support for affected families. “We remain committed to ensuring the safety, recovery, and resettlement of all affected residents,” he said.
