Chesongoch Mission Hospital Receives Sh1 Million Donation After Landslide Damage

The Mission of Essential Drugs Supply (MEDS) has donated drugs and mattresses worth Sh1 million to Chesongoch Mission Hospital as part of ongoing efforts to help the facility recover after a landslide destroyed part of it on October 30.

The medical supplies were handed over to the Elgeyo Marakwet County Government by MEDS Head of Commercial Services, Titus Munene. The hospital—run by Catholic nuns—has long been a key provider of healthcare in the region.

Governor Wisley Rotich, who received the donation, described it as a timely intervention that will significantly boost the hospital’s recovery. He noted that Chesongoch Mission Hospital has served local residents for the past 50 years, apart from a period when Benedictine Sisters withdrew from the area due to insecurity, leaving the facility unattended.

He added that although the county government has been operating a health camp in the area since the disaster, the Mission Hospital remains an essential partner in ensuring residents access comprehensive healthcare.

Meanwhile, Governor Rotich announced a change in the burial plans for victims of the Embobut/Embolot landslide in Marakwet East. The ceremony has been moved from November 17 to November 18. However, the burial date for victims from Chesongoch remains unchanged and will take place on November 21.

The governor appealed to well-wishers to continue supporting affected families, saying many survivors lost all their belongings and have been left without shelter. He reiterated that both county and national governments are exploring long-term solutions to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
