Babu Owino Calls for Reflection on Democracy in Africa: “Power Belongs to the People”
Embakasi East Member of Parliament, Hon. Babu Owino, has issued a strong statement emphasizing the importance of safeguarding democracy across Africa, calling on leaders to remember that political power is temporary and must always serve the will of the people.
In a message titled “Sio Lazima” (It’s Not a Must), Babu Owino reminded Kenyans and Africans at large that democracy is not an inheritance but a hard-earned treasure that must be defended continually.
“As a nation that shed blood, sweat, and tears to secure democracy, Kenyans must remember that this treasure cannot simply be handed down from one generation to another. It must be fought for and protected with vigilance,” he said.
The outspoken MP warned that neglecting democratic values has led many nations into dictatorship or military rule, urging African leaders to learn from such experiences.
Without naming specific countries directly, Babu Owino referenced recent political unrest in parts of the continent, including reports of post-election violence, civilian deaths, curfews, and internet shutdowns.
“These are practices that have no place in the modern world,” he stated. “Any leader who finds themselves resorting to such tactics should ask whether they are still serving their people or merely serving themselves.”
He further urged Tanzania’s President, Mama Samia Suluhu Hassan, to reflect deeply on recent developments in her country and to realign with the democratic ideals for which Tanzania has long been respected.
“This is not the Tanzania we know,” he said, adding that leadership is not a birthright and no one is destined to rule. “There is no honor in forcing yourself to lead people who are unwilling or unready to be led.”
Babu Owino concluded by reminding all African governments that power is transient, but the will of the people endures.
“Vox populi, vox dei — the voice of the people is the voice of God,” he said. “Authority is temporary, but the people’s will is eternal.”
