21 Confirmed Dead in Marakwet East Landslide, Search and Rescue to Resume Tomorrow – CS Kipchumba Murkomen
Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, Kipchumba Murkomen, has confirmed that 21 people have lost their lives following a devastating landslide that struck parts of Marakwet East.
In a statement released this evening, CS Murkomen said that over 30 people remain unaccounted for, as reported by their families. Search and rescue operations have been temporarily paused for the day due to challenging conditions but are set to resume tomorrow with reinforced efforts from the Kenya Defence Forces, the National Police Service, humanitarian organisations, and local community members.
Murkomen revealed that 25 people with serious injuries have been airlifted to Eldoret for specialized medical attention, while others with minor injuries have been treated locally.
“We have confirmed the loss of 21 people to this tragedy, while over 30 are still unaccounted for. The government, together with all partners, is doing everything possible to locate and assist those affected,” the CS stated.
He further noted that preparations are underway to deliver food and non-food relief supplies to the affected families. Military and police helicopters have been placed on standby to facilitate rapid distribution of aid to the disaster zone.
Murkomen urged residents living near seasonal rivers and landslide-prone areas to move to safer grounds as heavy rains continue in parts of the region.
“I wish to thank all organisations, individuals, and government agencies, including the county government, for their swift response and cooperation in this difficult time,” he added.
