President Ruto Posthumously Confers Highest National Honour on Raila Odinga
President William Samoei Ruto has posthumously awarded the title of Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya (C.G.H.), the nation’s highest civilian honour, to the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga.
Speaking during Mashujaa Day celebrations at Uhuru Gardens, President Ruto hailed Odinga as a “towering figure in Kenya’s democratic journey” and recognized his lifelong dedication to public service, reform, and national unity.
“This honour is a testament to the immense contribution Raila Odinga made to the Republic of Kenya,” President Ruto said. “His courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to justice have left an indelible mark on our nation’s history.”
Odinga, who passed away earlier this year, served as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013 and was a prominent opposition leader for decades. He was instrumental in the push for multiparty democracy in the 1990s and played a central role in constitutional reforms.
The award was received by members of the Odinga family amid a standing ovation from attendees, including dignitaries, politicians, and thousands of citizens gathered to honour Kenya’s heroes.
This is the first time in Kenya’s history that the C.G.H. title has been conferred posthumously on a former Prime Minister.
