Two airport workers were killed on Monday morning after a cargo aircraft skidded off the runway at Hong Kong International Airport and plunged partly into the sea.

According to reports by Reuters and AP News, the Boeing 747-400 cargo plane, operating under Emirates SkyCargo Flight EK9788 and leased to Turkey’s ACT Airlines, veered off the north runway during landing and collided with an airport security patrol vehicle.

Emergency teams rushed to the scene, where one of the workers was pronounced dead on site, while the second succumbed to injuries after being taken to hospital. The four crew members on board survived the crash and were evacuated safely.

Officials said the plane, which was not carrying any cargo at the time, lost control shortly after touchdown in rainy conditions. Authorities have since launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.

The 32-year-old aircraft was arriving from Dubai and had been operating under Emirates’ cargo division. Runway operations were temporarily suspended as recovery efforts continued, with airport management pledging full cooperation with aviation safety investigators.

The tragic incident has raised new concerns over aircraft maintenance and runway safety at one of the world’s busiest airports.
