Tragedy at Vigil: Police Officer Arrested After Fatal Shooting in Homa Bay
By Collins Wasike
A somber night vigil in Homa Bay turned tragic when a police officer allegedly shot and killed a woman during a procession honoring the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. The incident occurred on Thursday night near the entrance of the Homa Bay Police Station, where mourners had gathered to pay tribute to Odinga, whose death has sparked nationwide mourning.
The victim, identified as Lucy Oketch, was reportedly walking home when chaos erupted. Supporters of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) had lit candles and marched through the streets of Homa Bay town, eventually approaching the police station. According to County Police Commander Lawrence Koklem, tensions escalated when a group attempted to storm the station, prompting officers to intervene.
In the ensuing confusion, one officer opened fire, fatally striking Oketch. Witnesses claim she was not part of the group attempting to breach the station, raising questions about the use of force and crowd control measures.
The officer involved has since been arrested and is expected to face charges pending further investigation. Authorities have promised a thorough inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, as public outrage grows over the handling of the vigil.
The ODM party has condemned the incident, calling for justice and accountability. “This was a peaceful gathering to honor a national hero. The loss of life is unacceptable,” said a party spokesperson.
As the nation continues to mourn Raila Odinga, the tragedy in Homa Bay has cast a shadow over commemorations, igniting calls for police reform and restraint in handling public gatherings. Lucy Oketch’s death now stands as a painful reminder of the volatility that can erupt even in moments meant for reflection and unity.
