Tanzania Imposes Nationwide Curfew Amid Election Unrest

As dusk fell over Tanzania on October 29, 2025, the streets emptied under a sweeping nationwide curfew imposed by President Samia Suluhu’s administration. The move came after a day of mounting unrest, with protesters flooding major cities to challenge the integrity of the general election and demand political reforms.

The curfew, effective from 6 p.m. East Africa Time, was announced by police following violent clashes in Dar es Salaam, Arusha, and Mwanza. Tear gas filled the air as security forces attempted to disperse crowds that had torched vehicles, blocked roads, and vandalized polling stations. Despite the warnings, demonstrators vowed to continue their resistance, calling the curfew a “tactic to silence dissent.”

Internet services were abruptly shut down across the country, plunging citizens into a digital blackout that further fueled anger and confusion. Social media platforms, including WhatsApp and X, became inaccessible, cutting off communication and live updates from the ground.

“We will not be silenced,” shouted one protester in Dar es Salaam before being whisked away by police. “This is our country, and we demand transparency.”

The U.S. Embassy issued a safety advisory urging its citizens to shelter in place and avoid large gatherings. Meanwhile, international observers expressed concern over the escalating tensions and the government’s handling of the situation.

President Suluhu, who cast her vote earlier in the day, has yet to address the nation directly. Her administration insists the curfew is necessary to restore order, but critics argue it’s a sign of democratic backsliding.

As night deepens, Tanzania stands at a crossroads—between calm and chaos, silence and defiance. The coming days will reveal whether the curfew quells the unrest or ignites a broader movement for change.
