Senegalese President Faye Pays Tribute to Raila Odinga During Mashujaa Day Celebrations

Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Raila Odinga on Monday, October 20, 2025, during the Mashujaa Day celebrations held at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County.
In his address, President Faye expressed deep condolences to the people of Kenya following Raila’s passing, describing the former Prime Minister as a statesman and a towering figure in Kenya’s democratic journey.
“Before I begin, I would like to take this opportunity to renew the heartfelt condolences of the people of Senegal to the brotherly people of Kenya on the passing of Mr Raila Odinga, a former Prime Minister and a great leader in the political history of Kenya,” he said.
President Faye extended his compassion to President William Ruto, Raila’s family, and all Kenyans, wishing that Raila’s soul may rest in peace.
He lauded Raila’s courage and lifelong commitment to democracy, noting that his legacy will continue to inspire generations across Africa.
Faye also thanked President Ruto and the Kenyan people for the warm reception accorded to him and his delegation since their arrival, praising Kenya as a country rich in culture and natural wonders.
“I am here at the invitation of my brother, President William Ruto, as a guest of honour on this day celebrating Kenyan heroes,” he remarked.
President Faye emphasized the importance of honouring freedom fighters and patriots who sacrificed for the country’s liberation.“Our heroes deserve all honours. They deserve our respect. They deserve our admiration,” he stated, commending the spirit of Kenya’s Mau Mau fighters who endured immense suffering in the pursuit of independence.
This year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations, held for the first time in Kitui County, drew thousands of citizens, dignitaries, and top government officials who filled the stadium to capacity.
