Raila Odinga Honoured with Kenya’s Highest Award

The late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has been honoured with Kenya’s highest national award the Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart (C.G.H).

President William Ruto conferred the award on Monday during the Mashujaa Day celebrations held at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County.

According to a gazette notice dated October 20, 2025, Raila was recognised for his courage, endurance, and lifelong dedication to democracy, good governance, and unity in Kenya. The honour also celebrated his spirit of Pan-Africanism and service to humanity.

In his speech, President Ruto praised Raila as a towering patriot and hero for the ages.He said Raila’s legacy of sacrifice and commitment would continue to inspire generations.

“The Government and people of Kenya inscribe Hon. Raila Odinga’s name among the foremost of our heroes under the public seal of the Republic,” President Ruto stated.

He urged Kenyans to follow the values Raila stood for love for the nation, unity, and service to others. “If we choose to live by the lessons he taught us  to love Kenya more than ourselves, to value unity, and to serve with courage we can build a great nation of 50 million heroes,” Ruto said.

The honour came just a day after Raila was laid to rest at his rural home in Kang’o Ka Jaramogi, Bondo, Siaya County. He passed away on October 15, 2025, while receiving treatment in Kerala, India.
