Oscar Sudi Pays Emotional Tribute to Raila Odinga, Hailing Him as a Pillar of Peace and Unity
Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi has delivered a heartfelt tribute to the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, describing him as a “man of deep respect, wisdom, and patience,” and a true statesman whose legacy will live on in Kenya’s democratic and political history.
Speaking during a memorial reflection, Sudi painted a personal and emotional portrait of the late opposition leader, praising his unmatched humility, inclusivity, and respect for all people — regardless of their background, age, or political leaning.
“Raila Odinga was not just a politician; he was a father figure, a leader, and a friend to all Kenyans,” Sudi said. “His ability to treat everyone equally and his unwavering commitment to unity made him stand apart as a true statesman.”
Private Conversations During the 2022 Elections
In a rare public revelation, Sudi disclosed that during the tense and highly polarized 2022 general election period, he was in frequent phone communication with Raila Odinga. He revealed that their conversations were centered around maintaining mutual respect and ensuring that the peace of the nation was preserved — no matter the outcome of the elections.
“Despite the heated political environment, we spoke several times. Raila and I agreed that, win or lose, we would encourage our leaders and supporters to maintain peace,” Sudi shared.
Bridging Political Divides Behind the Scenes
In one of the more striking parts of his tribute, Sudi revealed that he personally facilitated at least four phone conversations between Raila Odinga and then–presidential candidate William Ruto during the election period. These behind-the-scenes engagements, he said, played a crucial role in fostering mutual understanding between the two rivals.
“People often don’t know what happens in the background,” Sudi noted. “But I can confirm that those phone calls were meaningful. They revealed a shared commitment to Kenya’s peace — beyond the political competition.”
Role in the Gen Z Protests Reconciliation
Addressing recent speculation about his role in the reconciliation between President Ruto and Raila Odinga during the widespread Gen Z demonstrations, Sudi acknowledged his involvement, but emphasized that it was a team effort.
“Yes, I was involved in those talks. But it wasn’t about me. It was a collective effort by several patriotic leaders committed to national unity and stability,” he clarified.
The reconciliation led to the formation of a broad-based government, reflecting a political environment of inclusion, dialogue, and compromise — ideals that Raila championed throughout his career.
A Legacy of Selflessness and StatesmanshipSudi commended Raila Odinga’s political journey, describing it as one marked by sacrifice, selflessness, and an unwavering commitment to national peace. He particularly admired Raila’s ability to pause, reflect, and sometimes retreat for the greater good of the country.
“His calm and reflective nature allowed him to see beyond personal ambition,” Sudi said. “He often took the difficult path — one that favored unity and compromise over confrontation.”
He encouraged today’s and future leaders to emulate Raila’s political maturity, urging them to prioritize dialogue, inclusion, and national interest in their service to Kenya.
Public Mourning and Unity Across the CountryIn a symbolic gesture to honor Raila’s life and legacy, Sudi announced that large digital screens have been set up at various locations across Eldoret to allow residents to follow the memorial services and pay their final respects.
“This is about national unity, about coming together to mourn a man who stood for togetherness,” he said. “Raila touched lives across every region and every community. Let us honor him together.”
“Kenya Has Lost a Giant”
Concluding his tribute, Sudi said that Kenya had lost not just a leader, but a giant of peace and unity. He described Raila’s influence as one that transcended politics, adding that his memory will continue to shape the nation for generations to come.
“Raila Odinga will be remembered not only for his political battles, but for his unshakable commitment to Kenya,” he said. “We have lost a hero — a pillar of peace, a voice of reason, and a true servant of the people.”
