ODM's Edwin Sifuna Condemns Governor Mutahi Kahiga for 'Shameful' Remarks About the Late Raila Odinga

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has issued a sharp rebuke against Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga following controversial remarks he made about the late Raila Odinga, the long-serving opposition leader and former Prime Minister, who passed away earlier this year.

ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna condemned Kahiga’s statements as “deeply disrespectful and uncalled for,” saying they tarnish the memory of a national icon whose life was defined by sacrifice, unity, and reconciliation.

“We know there are those who hated Baba, but it’s still shocking to hear it even now. Governor Mutahi Kahiga has proven himself to be among the vilest of that group,” Sifuna said during a press briefing at Orange House in Nairobi on Tuesday morning. “But Baba, in his unmatched grace, taught us to always respond with love. If he were still alive today, he would be the first to invite Kahiga for lunch, to laugh with him, and to show him the meaning of leadership with heart.”

Sifuna went on to caution leaders against using Raila Odinga’s name for political mileage or personal vendettas, especially at a time when the nation is still mourning the loss of a statesman.

“Even in death, Raila Amollo Odinga continues to command deep love and respect across Kenya and beyond. He stood for peace, democracy, and forgiveness. It is regrettable that some leaders, blinded by bitterness and tribal politics, still find it necessary to insult his legacy,” Sifuna said.

He called on President William Ruto and other senior leaders to distance themselves from what he termed as “dangerous political gutter talk” that threatens national cohesion.

“We urge the people of Nyeri and all Kenyans to reject this kind of leadership that thrives on hate and division. Baba deserves better, even in death,” Sifuna added.

Governor Kahiga has yet to respond publicly to the criticism. Attempts to reach his office for comment were unsuccessful by the time of publication.
